Centre for Community Engagement

The Orange Pavilion is a greenhouse and outdoor learning space that serves as a solution to the underutilised play area of a local school in Samut Prakan. Marrying education and play, this space becomes a nucleus for the community, pulsating with activity before, during, and after school hours. The architectural alchemy lies in the strategic use of low-cost materials, emphasising sustainability without compromising design integrity.

Design Methodology

The pavilion aims to infuse life and activity into this neglected canvas within the confines of a modest budget. Beyond the challenges posed by overgrown vegetation and the lack of landscaping treatments, the open area confronts the harsh environmental impact of direct sunlight, lacking any shading. This deficiency renders the space impractical for use during the afternoon hours.

The chosen construction materials of hardwood and treated plywood embody simplicity and durability, embracing a sustainable ethos with recycled and locally sourced components. The design is an exercise in thoughtful segmentation, offering a dual identity – and educational space during school hours and a playful haven thereafter.

Spatial Divisions

The pavilion is delineated into two distinct sections: an enclosed greenhouse, offering isolation from external elements, and an open terrace seamlessly integrated with the surrounding nature. Playful pathways weave through the greenhouse, establishing purposeful zones for various activities. The incorporation of integrated fences and walls is harmoniously complemented by climbing walls, providing an engaging and interactive play environment.
