Religious Architecture, Research & Masterplan.

The Community

The Surat Thani Diocese has allocated approximately 50 acres of land to support diverse ethnic groups, including the Muser (Lahu), Hmong, Kachin, Thai Yai, Akha, and indigenous Chinese tribes. Primarily located within Saint Peter's Church, Betong District, Yala Province, these communities have migrated from the northern region along the Thai-Myanmar border in Chiang Rai Province over the past two decades.

Engaged in various occupations such as forest clearing, rubber cultivation, and garden maintenance to sustain their families, many lack Thai identity cards and consequently face marginalisation within society. They typically reside on their employers' premises or rent temporary accommodations, resulting in a lack of stable housing and land ownership. Therefore, the provision of land represents an opportunity to extend assistance to these communities.

The centre's initial demographics include 40 families comprising ethnic groups, totaling 203 members. This diverse mix of residents and visitors reflects the inclusive and welcoming ethos of the Center, poised to enrich the cultural, spiritual, and socio-economic fabric of the region. It will explore the reappropriation of the vernacular to fit the programme, a harmonious blending of the host and guest cultures. Through understanding the facilitation of placemaking processes, the centre aims to promote a vibrant and cohesive community environment.

Programmes

The envisioned masterplan will serve as a beacon of faith and pride, attracting both local and foreign pilgrims and visitors seeking spiritual solace and quietude in Betong. The centre will offer diverse accommodation options such as homestays, camping grounds, and permanent residence houses.

In addition to its religious functions, the centre will serve as a dynamic learning and coordination hub, facilitating various activities including vocational training, youth engagement programs, and conventions. This multifaceted approach underscores the centre's commitment to holistic community development and empowerment.
